Message from the Next Level Campaign Chairs
As UHS approaches the half-century mark, we are incredibly thankful to each of you for your contributions of time and resources to help enrich our community and realize our collective vision of a truly equitable and transformational educational experience for all our students. As co-chairs of the Next Level Capital Campaign, we could not be more proud of what we have all accomplished together–and inspired by what is to come.
The Campaign is in full swing. We have seen our community come together around the critical priorities of student access, faculty support, and academic trailblazing by supporting the creation of the state-of-the-art science campus at the newCalifornia Street Campus. This addition to our school will not only serve to fully accommodate our growing community but will present a new, more public front door to the UHS campus–an outward-facing expression of UHS’s distinctive and evolving excellence. It is designed to engage the City at large, replace the existing parking lot with an active pedestrian experience along California Street, and welcome students, their families, and the public.
The new building will also maximize the potential of its urban location while its highly efficient design respects the scale and texture of the surrounding commercial and residential neighborhoods.
We believe that the deepest learning requires collaboration amongst diverse backgrounds, beliefs, experiences, and perspectives. To build and sustain a community that includes a wide range of social and cultural identities, we must continually engage in further our self-knowledge, equity literacy, and our ability to communicate effectively across differences. We challenge ourselves to do this work on both a personal and an institutional level, recognizing that our community is part of a larger and more complex world.
The new California Street campus embodies these values, will cement our continued academic leadership and propel us into our next fifty years, positioning us to make a greater impact on the world around us. It will be the first time UHS will have the opportunity to build a facility from the ground up, in effect allowing our school to align its physical space with its academic programming–allowing for growth well into the future.
With Appreciation,
Next Level Campaign Co-Chairs
Matt Farron, Rocky Fried, Matt Hobart, Laura Spivy, and Paul Wythes
FAQ
What’s the construction schedule? When is the building anticipated to open for students?Construction is anticipated to be June 2023-January 2025.
What time of the day will construction start and end? Are there other important details to share?
- The project will comply with the Article 29 of the San Francisco Police Code, which permits daytime construction during the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
- We expect the loudest activity to be the demolition period (42 working days). For this period workers will still arrive and begin preparations at 7 a.m.but we refrain from using the loud equipment such as jack hammers, roto-hammers, or other heavy duty demolition equipment until after 8:00 a.m..
- On most working days construction will conclude by 4:00 p.m.
- A later start time would mean later working hours (potentially past 5 p.m.) and potentially more days added to the schedule.
- As part of our mitigation measures, we will also be monitoring vibrations of the closest neighboring properties.
- We will stay in close contact with neighbors regarding upcoming activities and have a construction site contact for urgent matters.
- The City will not allow large deliveries during rush hours.
- Construction workers arrive early to avoid rush hour traffic.
