There are too many excellent things to say about this movie (creative, artistic, suspense, drama, humor, great script, clothes, makeup, sets, direction, editing, music, lights, acting, and everything involved with music), so I will say, GO WATCH THIS MOVIE!FYIThe short scene in this movie that some studios would cut (to save money, which is a very small amount in the budget) showed something important: HOW NOT TO ACT WHEN YOU HAVE POWER (including as the manager). Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Mephistro J I should start by stating that the director's first film "We're all going to the world's fair" was an absolute killer of a debut and it's actually in my top 10 favorite horror films of all time list. So, needless to say, I was really looking forward to this follow-up. There's just so much style and substance here that I can easily see myself rewatching this movie over and over. I really loved the vibe of this movie. The buzz around the tv show The Pink Opaque reminded me a lot of the fan buzz around Buffy The Vampire Slayer and how it became a landmark of pop culture for that early 90's era. I also really liked the underlying horror that existed just below the colorful and vibrant surface. I personally think the plot was genius and while I knew watching it, that some would not be happy with the ending (that was also a common complaint with "Late Night With The Devil" which is a masterpiece), I believe that many are missing the context of what was happening. I'm not going to give away any spoilers, but the ending is very similar to the conclusion of We're All Going To The World's Fair in that what you're seeing may not actually be what's happening. In any case, uber stylish arthouse horror films like this are so few and far between that I will give this film all the praise it deserves and more! And that soundtrack! There's several scenes that place special attention on the musical performances and because they're given time to play out, they are so powerful and leave a lasting imprint. My only personal gripe was that the fathers in both children's lives were a-holes. Believe me, there's plenty of horrible, crappy mothers out there too. I should know, as my own mom was one of them. It looks amazing. The look/aesthetic is just as 90s vintage looking as you could possibly imagine it, which is the only reason this is not a one star. Another positive, the director. I went to the music box showing with the director in attendance and the best part of the movie was the q&a after. Now let’s begin with the negatives… everything else. At the beginning of the movie i was excited because i thought i was in for an “90s style weird horror movie,” boy was i wrong. There was no horror… not a single jump-scare or moment of suspense. But it’s not extremely weird either. It was almost if it was trying to be really weird and scary but just missed the mark on both. I would say the movie is full of plot holes but there isn't really a plot for the holes to be in. Im 14 years old, and i feel this movie was trying to be sort of a “teen angst,” movie but i just really couldn't relate to any of it. There was so many incredible directions the story could have followed, but end up (fading to black) and pretending it never happened. I couldn't connect to the characters at all, but maybe that was the point. Anyway i like having characters i can connect to and root for, but the characters are just soo disconnected from reality. Now i love a movie with a good, well crafted ending. and i hate how this movie just kind of, ended… The only reason i clapped when it “ended” was because it ended. Ive never written a review before but bad movies make me mad that i wasted my time. Dont waste your time on this one! Enjoy!
